Henry Clay-American System and Missouri Compromise
The American System:
Henry Clay created the American System. The American System was made in effort to expand and strengthen the American Industry after the War of 1812. It was protected by the Tariff of 1816 (raised import taxes by 25%) (Armstrong 112). The American System supported improvements in transportation (The American System). It also created banks for businessmen; made it able for them to take out loans (The American System). The idea was borrowed from Europe putting-out system; led to textile industry using machines (Armstrong 112).
The Missouri Compromise of 1820:
The Missouri Compromise lasted for 34 years. It was a dispute over slavery that did not get solved. It was only a temporary solution. It should have darkened Monroe’s presidency and the Era of Good Feelings, but it did not due to Monroe’s popularity (Kennedy, Cohen, Bailey). The Missouri Compromise was an attempt to create free states and slave states equal. The Northerners thought an unbalance between free and slave states was ridiculous. Missouri had petitioned to join the Union as a slave state (Armstrong 108). Both the North and South were unhappy (Kennedy, Cohen, Bailey).
